Design Hunter Q+A with Jane Howard

Food stylist, enthusiast, blogger and online shopkeeper Jane Howard shares her gastronomically slanted design favourites with Habitusliving.

Your name: Jane Howard

What you do: Shop owner and blogger at emerald + ella

Your latest project: My new blog which pulls together all my favourite aspects of what I do – styling, recipes, travel, craft and homewares

Who are three people that inspire/excite you:

1) Food photographer and stylist Helen Dujardin. Her work is simple yet perfectly propped and lit so that you just want to dive in and eat every dish.

2) Food photographer and stylist Aran Goyoaga. I covet almost every foodie prop that she uses in her shots. The images are all pretty and light and full of colour.

3) All the creative bloggers out there posting about new and exciting things. Some of my favourites include: The Happy Home Blog, Eat Drink Chic, The Design Files and Sweet Paul.

What is your favourite…

Car model: a two-tone pop-top VW kombi van from the 50s/60s

Chair model: the Eames rocker – it’s a classic yet comfortable piece

Residential space: My parents’ home on Waiheke Island in NZ. It is a modern house nestled into a cliff with the most amazing views from almost every room.

Commercial space: The Anthropologie stores in London and the US.

Decorative product: The whimsical animal lamps at Have you met Miss Jones

Functional product: My Kitchen Aid mixer

Handmade good: Our gorgeous new cake stands. They are handmade and hand-painted by a lovely local guy just for us.

Mass-produced good: Bread. Everything tastes better in bread.

meal: Italian wood-fired pizza and a simple rocket salad.

restaurant: Petersham Nurseries in London.

drink: A good margarita on the rocks, no salt. It must be made with fresh limes.

bar: I prefer to have friends over for g&ts in the sunshine in our garden. Then you get to choose who to hang out with and what to listen to.

item in your studio: My new oversized fern. I have a thing for indoor plants at the moment.

piece of technology: I have recently re-discovered a love for the Polaroid camera. I like that you really think through a shot before you take it.

historical figure: N/A

fictional character: Amelie Poulain from the movie ‘Amelie’. She is such a quirky, relatable character. The fact that she lives in Montmartre is pretty appealing too.

vice: American barbecue – brisket, pulled pork, ribs, coleslaw…. All smothered in a smokey sticky barbecue sauce.

virtue: Honesty

What does the term ‘Design Hunter’ mean to you? Someone who always has their eyes peeled for covetable, exceptional, original design.
