Tropical Corner

Rolling Stone Landscapes have created a lush and relaxing outdoor area to accompany a modern home.

Designed by Dean Herald of Rolling Stone Landscapes, the aim of the project was to create an inviting space where the client could entertain family and friends.

The project was added to a recently completed new home, so the site was a blank canvas. A small lap pool to the side of the house and a deck off the back living area were the only pre-existing features. Herald’s concept for the space was to couple the vibrant energy of tropical and water plants and succulents with an elegant flooring design.

Vegetation at the site includes ornamental ginger, Mexican lily, bangalow palms, century plants, variegated mondo, rhoeo, small cape rush and Frangipani, with the overall effect being of exuberant growth balanced by more understated plants. Linear flooring consisting of hardwood decking and large porcelain tiles extends the perceived length of the space and creates a variation in colours and textures pleasing both to the eye and underfoot, and creates a visual continuity from the home to the rear planting.

The project also includes a water feature, which was designed into one side of the space. It consists of two stainless steel troughs housing small bubblers, and lighting has been installed to create atmospheric evening illumination.

The net result of the landscaping is a tranquil, inviting yard ideal for private relaxation or entertaining.
