Our homes are our castles and this has become even more apparent over the last few years. Home creates a place to belong but also influences us far beyond mere walls. In The Living Space category at the 2022 INDE.Awards, the stunning shortlist of outstanding residences become templates of great design and offers much food for design thought.
Clean and pared back or complex and layered, the houses in The Living Space shortlist offer extraordinary creativity and detail within appropriate form and function.
As supporter of The Living Space, Gaggenau understands that great design and superior function complements an inspirational residence. Presenting premium products that exceed the standard, Gaggenau believes in best practice, excellent design and quality manufacture and its products, wherever they are included, define a home as exceptional.
Reviewing the INDE.Awards shortlist of The Living Space category, Robert Warner, General Manager Retail Sales, BSH Home Appliances comments, “Gaggenau appliances are designed to be classic and timeless. We don’t subscribe to short-term trends, instead, the carefully crafted design of every Gaggenau appliance means we always have one eye on the sustainable future. How will the kitchen look in five, ten or twenty years – and beyond?
With so many excellent homes in a mere shortlist of 12, on first sight, everyone is a winner. While each project is sympathetic to site, connected to its surrounds and beautifully custom-designed for a particular client’s requirements it has been created for today but is also future ready.
Reflecting on the shortlisted homes and identifying any design continuum between them Warner says, “Throughout all shortlisted entries, the influence of the natural world is profound. There is strong design inspiration, not just to complement the external environment, but to create a beautiful internal landscape.
Thoughtful planning and spatial orientation can be seen with many living spaces being designed around internal courtyard spaces, bathing areas, tree features and green roofs. Sustainability is at the forefront of many projects, with a movement toward the minimisation of building waste, using local materials, exploration of natural thermal insulation and rainwater capture.”
Warner also reflects on his favourite homes in The Living Space and remarks, “Corner House impressively uses modest size to its advantage, creating a multitude of small living spaces, all looking out upon a beautiful landscape courtyard and ensuring it’s innately sustainable.
CASA MIA is an interesting project, truly minimising building waste to create a flexible family home. While the warm, tonal-palette and light-filled space of Autumn House is wonderfully inviting. Being set around a mature elm tree truly utilises the environment of the previous residence.”
Yes, it’s challenging to choose just one favourite home in this truly outstanding category and no doubt the jury encountered the same problem!
Perhaps Warner’s sentiments echo what we all feel, “It is really exciting to understand the varying influencers driving design concepts within the residential space, particularly the focuses on the natural environment and sustainability. Designing Living Spaces and the focus for architects and their clients, has evolved from solely creating visually beautiful spaces, into the introduction of sustainable building and living methodologies as key considerations. I am looking forward to seeing how the judges interpret the various projects, specifically around these new key concepts.”
It will be thrilling to see who receives the ultimate accolade in The Living Category at INDE.Awards 2022, along with all the other categories, so mark the 4th August in your diary when we can all come together to celebrate the 2022 INDE.Awards gala event in Melbourne.
