They come in all shapes and sizes and inspire great creativity. They’re a big part of our lives, our cultures and our childhoods, so we thought we’d check out some of our favourite creatures in design.
Sculptures
Designed by: Peter McliskyWhy we love it: There are a few different designs in this collection, but we love the colourful bunnies with attitude. They come in powdercoated colours or weathered steel.
Designed by:Charles and Ray Eames (1945)Why we love it: There’s just so much character in this little creature. Originally designed in ply, the elephant never made it to production, but you can now get your hands on the plastic version. Made for entertaining other little creatures around the house!
Designed by: Kay BojesenWhy we love it: This cheeky monkey is crafted in Denmark from teak and limba wood. It has movable arms and head and is just made for hanging about the house. Such fun!
Designed by:AesopWhy we love it: Aesop have such a wonderful philosophy in caring for people’s skin, but they also love your pets! This animal wash is packaged in the same distinctive Aesop bottle with a cute picture of a dog on the side. They tell us it’s also good for human animals too!
Designed by: Dennis Thies, Michael RosingWhy we love it: These nifty little lights have a metal plate in front to cast a large shadow on the wall. There are some shady looking characters as well as silhouettes of birds.
Designed by:Julia deVilleWhy we love it: The macabre creatures of jeweller Julia deVille are no clever illusion, she uses real animals as the basis for her work – usually donated and always having died of natural causes. While they can seem quite creepy at first, they are actually very beautiful creations, giving the animals a sort of poetic resurrection with the finest jewellery techniques.
Designed by: Matt PughWhy we love it: This gorgeous lamp from UK-based designer Matt Pugh is just so much fun. It feels like this naughty duck has been sprung poking around your living room, so has chosen a rather conspicuous hiding place. Love!
Designed by:Donna WilsonWhy we love it: A fantastic little kit for you (and maybe the kids) to create your very own stuffed monsters. It comes with all the “bits and bobs” to make a clever little creature to love and care for.
